Volunteer Cancer Support Specialist
Job Description

Position Summary
Make a tremendous difference in the lives of cancer fighters, survivors, and caregivers! The Volunteer Cancer Support Specialist is the backbone of our 1-on-1 cancer support service and directly facilitates personalized 1-on-1 cancer support for the cancer fighters, survivors, and caregivers who contact us. The key to success for this position is providing outstanding service to our community members. The Volunteer Cancer Support Specialist does this while provide a reassuring, calming, nurturing, and empathetic presence and voice.

Performance Objectives:
  • The most important objective for our cancer support program is to ensure that everyone who requests a Mentor Angel gets the help they need.
    • work an average of at least 10 cases per week within 60 days after training by:
      • assessing the support needs of support-seekers and Mentor Angels
      • screening, training, and adding potential Mentor Angels to our community
      • referring cancer fighters, survivors, and caregivers to external partner orgs as needed
    • learn the complete list of cancer partners and where/when/who to refer to their resources within 60 days
    • learn basic anatomy, cancer-related medical terminology within 120 days
  • provide a “wow” level of service to our community at all times -to cancer fighters, survivors, caregivers, volunteers, partners, donors, and other supporters
  • Technical objectives
    • Learn to use Salesforce.com to insure 100% data input accuracy within first 60 days
    • Learn to use advanced Google Apps tools like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc within first 60 days to ensure accurate and efficient communication

General
  • Attend scheduled team meetings relating to the connections program
  • Observe organizational rules, roles, expectations, guidelines and values

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Cancer Survivor or Caregiver - per our policy all Cancer Support Specialists are cancer survivors or caregivers
  • Excellent verbal, written and general computer skills
  • Organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, takes initiative
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision 
  • Strong work ethic, a good sense of humor, a friendly personality
  • General awesomeness


Time commitment:

  • A minimum of 8 hours per week over at least a 4 month period
